Prophylaxis (cleaning)

Prophylaxis (cleaning)

In dentistry Prophylaxis is the term for regular dental cleaning. It is recommended that you have a cleaning done every six months or twice a year unless you are suffering from periodontal disease in which case it can be recommended to receive a cleaning every three to four months. This frequency of cleaning will help to mitigate the symptoms of periodontal disease and with a proper home routine can prevent periodontal disease all together.

In most offices the cleaning is done by the hygenist. They are a qualified professional employee, which can identify potential problems with your dental health. During the cleaning the hygienist will remove deep deposits of plaque buildup around your gums, as well as, providing a topical fluoride solution to the enamel of your teeth. The fluoride will increase the strength of your enamel and help to prevent tooth decay in the future.
